The weather outside may be a little lackluster, but your skin doesn’t have to be. Here we give you the tips on how to banish dry skin and give your winter skin care regimen a boost.
Just as your body needs different clothing to protect it against the changing weather, your skin can often need a different skin care regime to properly protect it from the elements. Winter months generally are colder and drier than summer months when heat and humidity levels are on the rise. When skin is exposed to the harsh winter weather it starts to crave hydration and can become excessively dry, irritated and chapped. Cold weather, winds and spending much of the time in a home or office with dry heat blasting can all contribute to dry skin.
Tips for protecting skin during the Winter months
As our skin is directly exposed to the fluctuating weather, it’s important that we care for and protect our skin accordingly.
Sunscreen: Even though you can’t see it, the winter sun is still emitting harmful UVA and UVB rays. They may not be as strong as they are in the summer, but they are still doing damage to your skin. Use products that contain SPF to protect your skin from the harmful rays of that sneaky winter sun. And don’t forget to reapply your SPF every two hours just as you would during the summer.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture: If the skin’s natural barrier is weakened, moisture is lost and the surface layers of the skin crack easily. Potential irritants are also able to penetrate the barrier, which can cause redness and sensitivity. Over the longer term, this is thought to damage collagen production, contributing to skin ageing. Moisturising regularly should be a key part of your winter skincare routine to prevent this.
Exfoliate: The cold weather makes your skin drier and, as a result, more dead skin cells are found on dehydrated skin. The build-up of dead skin cells dulls the complexion by making your skin appear blotchy and uneven. You can physically exfoliate your body by using a natural loofah, a granular body scrub such as Image exfoliating body scrub, a body brush or washcloth.
Keep Hydrated: Moisture works from the inside out as well as the outside in, so in addition to nourishing your skin externally with creams and lotions, drink plenty of water which will hydrate from within.
Give Your Hands a Hand: The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside and use a hand cream that has an spf such as Image rejuvenating hand cream with spf 15.
Protect sensitive areas: Protect sensitive areas such as broken skin capillaries against temperature change and wind – this is particularly important if you suffer from rosacea, or skin reddening. Sufferers may notice that exposure to temperature fluctuations inside and outside makes this worse. Avoid hot water: Take shorter, warmer showers and baths. Hot water strips away natural oils as does staying submerged in water. Tip: As soon as you step out of your warm bath, gently pat yourself dry and massage in a nourishing body moisturiser or oil while your skin is still moist. Doing this will help seal in the moisture
