Pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation) is due to excess melanin production and deposition in the skin, causing uneven colour and freckles. The main cause is sun damage or photo-ageing but pigmentation can also be aggravated by other factors, including hormones such as pregnancy or the contraceptive pill, certain medications, Vitamin B12 deficiency and also inflammation following trauma or troublesome acne lesions.
IPL is an excellent treatment for hyperpigmentation and age spots. It releases short pulses of filtered light which is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within pigmented lesions. This light energy heats the melanin, thereby destroying the melanin-rich cells.
Each treatment session takes just 15-30 minutes depending upon the nature of the lesion and the precise surface area involved.
Are there any side effects?
There may be minor redness but this usually disappears over the next day or so. Sometimes the treated lesions appear darker after treatment and more obvious at first but gradually the marks will fade away.
We strongly recommend the daily use of proper sun protection once successfully treated to reduce the risk of recurrent pigmentation spots.
Medical Peels use a solution applied to your skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. It is effective in treating pigmentation as it lifts off a layer of older and damaged skin and stimulates the growth of fresh new healthy skin in its place.
Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating away superficial pigmentation marks and thus stimulating the growth of new skin.
Hydroquinone is viewed as the most effective topical treatment for skin lightening. It works by attacking a certain enzyme, tyrosinase, which is crucial to the production of melanin. It can take a few weeks to see a significant change, and usually only fades pigmentation rather than remove it completely. Therefore it is often used in conjunction with other treatments.
At Renaissance we may also recommend a combination of treatments, for example a combination of IPL, Image Skincare Peels and Medical Microdermabrasion.
We also recommend combining your treatment with a skincare regime high in Vitamin A, C and E, Hylauronic Acid and a Zinc based SPF 30. This should be maintained throughout the entire course of the treatment and can be continued long term.
